We are pleased to have Dr. Julie Alexandrin as our guest speaker
Dr. Alexandrin is an Associate Professor of Abilities and Disabilities Studies at University of Southern Maine. She began her career as a learning disabilities teacher in a public middle school and then moved on to work as a speical education teacher with moderate-to-severe emotional and behavioral disabilities students.
Dr. Alexandrin has great insight into working with students who have a disability, having severe dyslexia herself and reading with recorded books throughout her undergraduate degree After teaching, she realized that she could do more in educating teachers, and pursued her masters and doctorate at the University of Connecticut. Dr Alexandrin started her professorship at a small college in CT, and in 2007, joined USM to create a professional program for educators who work with youth and are gifted and talented and/or have disabilities.
Dr. Alexandrin has done research in disclosure of hidden disabilities at the postsecondary level, accommodations for students with disabilities, and stereotyping and biases connected to disabilities and how they affect educators working with youth. She is currently coordinating and running an annual youth conference called Creating Welcoming and Safe Schools for all.
